I don't sell hamburgers. I provide a service. Someone who doesn't make money for the country by selling things to the Chinese, or Germans, for example. I think it would be a great thing for the country to make widgets again, and sell them to foreigners who want our widgets. It would be nice to make world class widgets again.
The problem has been that our leaders were persuaded that Americans could do without manufacturing jobs. Maybe these leaders thought it was more important for corporations to make profits through lowering their labor costs. I imagine too many Americans saying, "Well, my company is making a fortune, but I'm making nothing on the deal..."
Are these leaders changing their minds now that the wealth of the country has been dragged out the barn door? Is it too late to do anything about it?
