The question I have is why we are concerned about covering our mouths when we cough, or washing our hands, to prevent the spread of germs, and yet no one seems very much concerned that the Meltdown in Fukushima will likely kill just as many people as germs in the coming years? Is this an exaggeration? Has anyone asked an expert on the effects of a nuclear power plant meltdown about the long-term effects of Fukushima to know how many people might die because of it? I suspect that people don’t know very much about radiation, or about the effects of radiation on health. Nor do I think that people know very much about the effects of environmental factors on health. People may hear about germs and suspect that little creatures might cause them harm or suffering. But, they don’t understand very much about it…germ theory. And more, they hear about and understand less about radiation.
The point of being ignorant about this issue, and the point of making sure people continue to be ignorant, is that there is a lot of money at stake. If people were concerned about the effects of radiation on their health, then they might want to regulate or hinder the nuclear power industry in its efforts to continue profitably.
